Die wolmark het hierdie week hoër verhandel / This week the wool market traded stronger

MARKANALISE

Die koper was Lempriere SA. Hartlik geluk met die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSES

This week the wool market traded stronger and the Cape Wools Market Indicator increased by 1.9%, to close with 398 points higher, on R210.12/kg (clean). The Australian EMI increased by 3.3%. The increase this week occurred, in spite of a stronger Rand. This week the Rand saw levels of R14.01 against the US Dollar during the auction, which is a 2.6% increase, as well as a 1.7% increase against the Euro, compared to levels during the previous sale. The largest increase of up to 1.9%, was in the 20 and 20.5 micron segments. Standard Wool bought the highest quantity of bales this week, followed by Modiano, Tianyu SA and Lempriere SA. 9 450 Bales were on offer in total, of which 97.6% were sold.
On the OVK auction 2 856 bales were on offer, of which 98.3% were sold. The highest price of R172.10/kg, was achieved for a 3 bale lot AH of 18.2 microns, from the clip of JL du Randt, Elliot. The buyer was Lempriere SA. Congratulations on the performance!

FORECAST

The strengthening of the wool market on this week's auction, was in spite of a stronger Rand against the main influential currencies. This is an indication of a healthy demand for good quality long and fine Merino wool in SA, as well as on the Australian market, which also saw an increase this week. During the past couple of auctions the demand for shorter wool was under pressure, but showed a recovery this week and started to trade higher. In SA, receivals of wool in the stores of the brokers are still almost 30% lower compared to the previous season and accumulated 12.29% less than the 2017/18 season. Wool from Lesotho is still not allowed to be traded in SA, because borders are still closed for fibre trade in SA. Discussions of a planned wool auction for this week in Lesotho took place, but did not realise. There is still uncertainty about a workable solution for the unfavourable situation in Lesotho.
Rift Valley Fever is still a reality and outbreaks in the nearing summer season is a real possibility. Ewes which already lammed off, could be treated with the live vaccine, while pregnant ewes and rams can be vaccinated with the inactivated vaccine. Farmers must ensure that animal health is managed properly during the mating and lambing season and that an integrated dosing and feeding program is followed. If the mother flock receives the correct and well timed treatment, it will reflect in the survival and health of the offspring. It is also very important that lambs have to be processed as early as possible in terms of feeding and trace element supplementation in order to boost immunity and will ensure general health and stimulate growth. The next wool auction is scheduled for 28th of November 2018, where 13 280 bales will be on offer. This report by Heinrich Victor, Operational Manager Fibre - OVK.
