In Port Elizabeth het die wolmark, op die eerste veiling van 2019, hoër verhandel / In Port Elizabeth the wool market traded higher on the first auction of 2019

MARKANALISE

Die koper was Modiano. Hartlik geluk met die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSES

In Port Elizabeth the wool market traded higher on the first auction of 2019 and the Cape Wools Market Indicator increased by 4.2%  and 863 points, to close on R216.48/kg (clean). The Australian EMI also increased by 3.6%. This week the Rand performed weaker during the auction and traded at levels of R13.95/kg against the US Dollar, which is a 1.2% decrease, as well as 2.2% weaker against the Euro, compared to levels during the previous sale. The largest increase of up to 5%, was in the 22.5 micron segment. Although there was strong competition on long, well grown Merino wool, better quality shorter wools also showed improvement. Modiano bought the highest quantity of bales this week, followed by Standard Wool, Lempriere SA and Tianyu SA. 10 850 Bales were on offer in total, of which 95.8% were sold.
On the OVK auction 3 351 bales were on offer, of which 96.7% were sold. The highest price of R182.00/kg, was achieved for a 1 bale lot AAH of 17.7 microns, from the clip of Goodman Ginyigazi from Glen Grey. The buyer was Modiano. Congratulations on the performance!

FORECAST

The increase in the wool market this week is the result of a slightly weaker Rand, but mainly on the back of a worldwide stronger demand for good quality long, fine Merino wool. Wool production worldwide, remains under pressure though. In SA, receivals of wool in the stores of the brokers this week, is still substantially lower, compared to the same week of the previous season and accumulated, 13.74% less than the 2017/18 season. That could be attributed to the fact that some production areas are still suffering severe droughts, while other regions are starting to experience renewed drought conditions. This has a direct influence on shearing patterns of producers, who are forced to shear shorter wool, because of unfavourable feeding conditions. Drought conditions cause feeding stress, which results in lower immunity of animals. That will negatively influence production and reproduction and therefore farmers must ensure that animal health is managed properly and that an integrated dosing and feeding program is constantly followed. The result will reflect in the reproduction rate and the survival and health of the offspring. It is also very important that lambs have to be processed as early as possible in terms of feeding and trace element supplementation in order to boost immunity, which will ensure general health and stimulate growth.
The next wool auction is scheduled for 16 January 2019, where 13 567 bales will be on offer. This report by Heinrich Victor, Operational Manager Fibre - OVK.
