Alhoewel die aanbod hierdie week uit goeie kwaliteit lang, fyn Merinowol bestaan het, was die mark onder druk / Although the offering this week consisted of good quality, well grown Merino wool, the market was under pressure

MARKANALISE

Die koper was New England Wool. Baie geluk met die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

Hierdie verslag deur Heinrich Victor, Operasionele Bestuurder Vesel - OVK

MARKET ANALYSES

In Port Elizabeth the wool market ended lower this week and the Cape Wools Merino Indicator decreased by 3.3% and 736 points, to close on R214.42/kg (clean). The Australian EMI also lost a bit of field and decreased by 1.3%. This week the Rand lost more ground against the most important currencies and traded at levels of R14.34/kg against the US Dollar, which is a 0.9% decrease, as well as 0.8% weaker against the Euro, compared to levels during the previous sale. The biggest decrease this week of up to 3.6%, was in the 20micron segment. Although the offering this week consisted of good quality, well grown Merino wool, the market was under pressure, because of the limitation of exports to China. Shorter wool is under more pressure, as buyers are forced to stricken their selection even more within the trading environment. Standard Wool bought the highest quantity of bales this week, followed by Modiano, Lempriere SA and Tianyu SA. 6 582 bales were on offer in total, of which 90.5% were sold.

On the OVK auction, 1 379 bales were on offer of which 93.3% were sold. The highest price on the OVK auction, of R182.00/kg, was for a 1 bale lot BH of 17.1 microns, from the clip of AD Dicks from Stutterheim. The buyer was New England Wool. Congratulations on the performance!

FORECAST

This week's decline in the wool price can be attributed to suspension of exports to China. The exchange rate contributed to the fact though that the decline was not that big. The demand for high quality top making wool from Europe, is still healthy, but the capacity is limited. At this stage the shorter wool segment is the most negatively affected by the suspension. In SA, receivals of wool this week is 96% lower compared to the same week of the previous season and accumulated, 14% less than the 2017/18 season. The situation regarding fibre trade with Lesotho is still at a dead end and borders stay closed for wool and mohair. For the near to medium term future a degree of volatility can still be expected in the wool market due to the uncertainty and concern about the export ban to China, but also due to the stagnant economic situation in Europe. Producers must ensure sustainable farming practices are followed, because traceability is starting to play a very important role in the production of export commodities like natural fibres. Focus in this regard is therefore of essence, because it will become an inextricable factor of our industry. The next wool auction is scheduled for 20 March 2019 when approximately 5 220 bales will be on offer. This report by Heinrich Victor, Operational Manager Fibre - OVK.
