Op die 32ste veiling van die seisoen, het die wolmark in Port Elizabeth die week weer efens swakker verhandel / On the 32nd auction of the season the wool market in Port Elizabeth lost some ground this week

MARKANALISE

5 686 Bale is in totaal aangebied, waarvan 77.4% verkoop is. Die koper was New England Wool. Baie geluk met die prestasie!

VOORUITSIGTE

MARKET ANALYSES

On the 32nd auction of the season the wool market in Port Elizabeth lost some ground this week and the Cape Wools All Wool Indicator decreased by 2.5% and 514 points, to close on R202.25/kg (clean). The Australian EMI decreased by 1.5%. This week the Rand strengthened against the most important currencies and traded 0.8% stronger against the US Dollar and 0.7% stronger against the Euro, compared to levels during the previous sale. The biggest decrease this week of up to 5.8%, was in the 18 micron segment. Modiano bought the highest quantity of bales this week, followed by Standard Wool, Tianyu SA and Stucken. 5 686 bales were on offer in total, of which 77,4% were sold. On the OVK auction, 2 025 bales were on offer of which 86.7% were sold. The highest price on the OVK auction, of R168.00kg, was for a 3 bale lot BH of 17.7 microns, from the clip of JJ Potgieter Farming from Wakkerstroom. The buyer was New England Wool. Congratulations on the performance!

FORECAST

This week’s slight decrease in the wool price can be predominantly attributed to the exchange rate, as well as the decrease in the Australian EMI. The ban on exports to China still plays a significant role though and that reflects in the price decrease in especially shorter wool. Until there is clarity regarding the situation, producers are therefore still advised to, if possible, customize their shearing pattern in order to produce a longer wool, because wools of lengths less than 65mm, are experiencing the highest pressure, for these are the types which are mostly exported to China. In SA, receivals of wool this week, is 58% lower compared to the same week of the previous season and accumulated, 13.46% less than the 2017/18 season. In Lesotho the High Court granted judgement in favour of the producers and ordered that the export ban on fibre to SA must be uplifted. We trust that fibre trade with Lesotho will return back to normal soon. Internationally more emphasis is put on sustainability and traceability and sustainable farming practices will therefore have to enjoy more attention, also in the fibre industry, in order to compete internationally. Producers must also ensure that flocks are vaccinated against diseases such as Rift Valley Fever, in order to prevent outbreaks that could again result in huge economic losses. Out of season outbreaks is possible, due to good rains in some production areas, which was followed up by unusual warm weather conditions for this time of the year. Ensure therefore that an integrated vaccination and dosing program is followed and maintained at all times, together with sufficient feeding. The next wool auction is scheduled for 29 May 2019.
